Black Square of Doom ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Hi everyone,

Had my render queue running overnight for some portfolio images and got a disappointing result.

0001

The rest of the image looks amazing with very soft shadows cast through a glass window from a custom HDRI and some physical lights inside the boxed in room.

This image was rendered with GPU mode w/ Quadro RTX 4000, 1500 samples, 24 ray bounces, 24 GI bounces, and interior mode lighting.

I checked on this image around 800 samples and the black square wasnโ€™t present, but looking at the rendering layers, it does show up in the clown pass as a separate body.

Any ideas on what caused this and how to potentially prevent?

Thank you,
M

Hi Mitchell,

This issue could have different causes. Recently, weโ€™ve seen a case where Denoise with GPU Mode caused similar black squares. It could be the same issue, or something else

Is there any chance you can share your scene?
If you canโ€™t share publicly, then you can also send me a private message.

Best,
Dries

Hi @dries.vervoort,

Thank you kindly for the response and explanation, it gives me a sense of relief.

I am sending you a ZIP of the KSP and 3 PSD files (2 with problems and 1 without for reference) that all came from the same queue.

Cheers,
M

I had exactly the same issue just now with the 2023.2 version of KeyShot while I was creating an animation. Must say quite disappointing to see this 1 frame with black square after waiting for a long time. I cannot share the files, since I am under NDA, but here is a zoom in view:

My GPU was on, but the denoise was off. Same was with stills. To fix the still image I had to change the camera angle.

@dries.vervoort, is there a hotfix planned for this issue in the near future? Itโ€™s concerning to think that this could occur with any rendering.

May I ask which version of 2023.2 you used? The 12.1.1.11? I actually thought this issue was already fixed since it used to appear sometimes in my viewport as well.
