Braun HL70 fan

Results of some practicing with surface imperfections on a model I created in 2016. Model has a lot of flaws but for a bit of practice it was good enough. I used mainly Substance Painter for some wear since it’s quick and easily to control.

I did render with denoise on which is sometime a bit aggressive, used GPU at 1000 samples.

Everything is nice, but that plexiglass is a real deal. I like that.

Thanks @Erdem_Erduvan!

I was also happy how that worked out and how it reacts to the angle of the light. Feels quite natural. Could have masked out a few area’s maybe where damage is less likely.

The plastic parts need maybe a bit more bump with the scratches and a bit more changes of roughness. It’s just so easy to get carried away and to overdo it.

But nice way of learning, see if I can model some other Braun item and keep the model cleaner than this one which is pretty low poly. Substance also likes to have nice UV’s and at the time I created this I was scared of UV’s, bit less currently

I don’t like to talk about negative things when someone shares their work. I don’t really look for things that are bad or not good enough. I’m not that expert after all! I’m just trying to show some respect for the work done.

Yeah, it can be less disruptive since the body is much smoother.

I didn’t know what the product was so I googled it and your renders are much better except for the actual product shots.
BTW, that is a very interesting product originally from Germany in the '70s.
Thanks again.

I’m pretty critical about my own things but I think you can always learn by what other people see or notice. And people with experience with the same software know better where to look and where is room for improvement. With only compliments it’s way harder to get any better, well that’s my feeling about comments/critics. So feel free to comment on my posts here, I don’t take it personal and doesn’t matter if you are better or just look at different parts.

It’s really worth looking for Dieter Rams / Braun designs. They also were a big inspiration for some Apple products. Most of his designs where real basic and simple and in the 70’s he had a set of 10 principles he thought were needed for a design to be good:

  1. Good design is innovative
  2. Good design makes a product useful
  3. Good design is aesthetic
  4. Good design makes a product understandable
  5. Good design is unobtrusive
  6. Good design is honest
  7. Good design is long-lasting
  8. Good design is thorough down to the last detail
  9. Good design is environmentally-friendly
  10. Good design is as little design as possible

I’ve never studied anything about design, well never studied basically, but I can be really amazed by designs sometimes. If you look at designs he created throughout the years it’s really amazing how much he was ahead of time, fascinates me.

This turned out nicely! Fun model and a classic one at that. I modeled this one too back when I was learning MODO years ago

You know what I really enjoy your post. I always admire people like you. You don’t hold yourself to share your knowledge and they are so informative. I think you should have a blog if you don’t have one.

If we ever meet in person, I’m sure I will enjoy chatting with you very much. BTW, I add you on LinkedIn if you don’t mind.

Thanks for sharing.

I looked at MODO too, but I didn’t model that one. Perhaps why I didn’t go for it.
I was already using Fusion 360 for design, and Keyshot was much more interesting for render.

@will.gibbons haha, exactly the same here. I tried so many times to learn 3DS Max after playing with 3D Studio during the DOS days. But it just lacks the logic my mind needs. I wasted about 10 years trying to visualize my own idea’s in Sketchup but if it ain’t architecture Sketchup is quite painful to use and it’s mainly knowing which plugin you need. Than I discovered MODO and started with I think a NES controller and later this fan. Made so much more sense how MODO’s interface worked and how quick you got nice results following the tutorials from Vaughan Ling.

Still working on modelling skills but its fun to learn. I do think it’s a shame the ChaosGroup dropped V-Ray for MODO since it was so handy to use proxies throughout several programs. Think it would be nice if Keyshot created a nice live link plugin between MODO and Keyshot so they could get those disappointed V-Ray clients

I’ve always difficulties chatting IRL about nothing but it’s so easy to have nice conversations if you share interest in the same topics.

Feel free to add me on LinkedIn. I’m not that active on any social media currently but I do like to see what others are up to. Currently I’m not allowed to work for my own clients and since I don’t want to get totally crazy I’m focussing on working on some own projects and helping out other if I think I can. Good way to spend time and learn something as well

Hey Oscar! Be sure to post this idea about a live link plugin for MODO and KeyShot in product feedback so we can see if anyone else upvotes it. We are always excited to hear what ideas the community has for the product and what would be most useful!

Also, you got me started reading about Dieter Rams last night. Thanks for sharing that great info, and for being an awesome part of our community!
