Gym Equipment and Pieces

Hi everyone! I create 3D renders of gym equipment for my job.
Attached are some images of my work, relatively new to the render game so feedback and critique is welcomed and appreciated. Trying to make the look as realistic and 1:1 to the actual products as possible. Thank you!

That’s a good start!

A tip which is easy (with Keyshot) and will make renders look way more realistic is using rounded corners. The thing is in reality no corner is so sharp that it doesn’t reflect light. Basically all edges of objects you see are ‘rounded’ corners. In a 3D model lots of times corners are so sharp that they don’t reflect light, if you like you can model bevelled edges but in Keyshot you can also select one or more objects and give them a corner radius. That works pretty well.

Since the first picture shows a lot of cylinder shapes I created a small scene so you can see difference if you’ve an ‘unlimited’ sharp corner or a rounded one. Has a big impact on how the light works the object.

Another tip is to prevent repetitive patterns like now on the flooring. That’s not always as easy but you can also try a ‘noise’ texture for a floor with a more random pattern or you just position the camera the way that it uses some depth of field and you just don’t see the repetitive pattern anymore.

It all depends a bit on the kind of renders you want in the end but sometimes it also helps to look at nice pictures of a same kind of environment to get some nice idea’s about how to play with lights and the camera. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply! I will definitely try those tips out on my next render.

Here’s a bit of a progress update in one my recent renders. rounded edges are legit!

Recently completed Will Gibbon’s Material Graph lecture and it has really opened my mind on how to make different types of textures and materials

These look much better, but if weights look a little off. You can use re-tessellate to make them more circular. And for the shiny metal, you can use some roughness and bump map to give them little imperfections.

Cool! Glad to hear the course was helpful to you!
