Leather Bag

Hello, here is my latest personal project. Modeled with ZBrush and rendered with KeyShot of course. I hope you like it :slightly_smiling_face:

So awesome again! Love the lock as well. If I may make a suggestion…

I thought something looked a bit off, couldn’t pinpoint it at first but after looking at a lot of painted leather bags I think I know. The rough side of the leather belt looks a bit flat but I think it’s actually because it’s really diffuse and lighter than the front side of the leather.

I don’t have leather bags around but I think if the leather is painted the rough side should be darker than the front side. Basically the same color but since it’s rough it absorbs more light. If I looked at belts for pants they have mostly just one painted side and the other side is the natural color of the leather most of the time. Think it’s two layers of thin leather sticked together but I’m no sewing king.

The last colored image is almost an optical illusion how the belt looks at the right of the picture

Anyway, crazy smooth model as well. Think you could do a stitch webinar

Another little detail is what edges of leather are usually waxed to make them smooth - otherwise, they quickly warn out. But without waxing it looks like a nice handmade product, so it’s your decision to choose.

Thanks for the insight :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you for the nice words! And the feedback, awesome :slightly_smiling_face:
The material for the back side of the leather is one of the two things that I am not happy with but without your feedback I would have just left it as it is. Now I feel I want to explore that material with your feedback in mind. And the layers on leather…alot more complicated when you start examining real close
I think I would need minimum 3 materials to get all sides somewhat correct, now I am just using one for the front and one for the back.
Again, awesome feedback. Thank you!

Well I don’t think I would have mentioned it if you didn’t put so much time in your models/renders. Seems to me you’re also quite a perfectionist. I sometimes have a hard time thinking it’s enough for one render project and continue to the next because there’s always something that can be improved.

I just remembered I actually made one strap once for the Braun record player. I also started with 2 materials but split the side later in KeyShot which is the fastest way to get another material in the mix.

I saw I used displacement for the roughness idea of the rough side. The bad thing is that if I would zoom in further you see it’s not connected to the sides anymore. I corrected it with an offset in the displacement but it would be really nice if KeyShot had an option to keep the sides connected even if you use displacement so you keep the geometry connected.

Not sure if of any use but this is how it looks, it wasn’t a stitched strap but had only some embossed lines. Maybe just for show or because it consists of two glued layers, not sure.

Yes, I am a bit of a perfectionist but with my limited time I sometimes rush some parts and just wing it and move on. But I am actually looking forward to put in some more time and try to improve it and do some renders in even higher resolution. And it is likely that I will have use for that in other upcoming projects as well since it seems that I like to do stuff made of leather :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you, I am glad you appreciate my modeling skills
