With reflective and transparent materials, its all about lighting. THe lighting of the object can make a bigger impact on what it looks like than the material settings itself oftentimes. There’s a reason Apple made the whole slash/glare look popular with their iphone renders and animations. It makes it look like glass. Try using the add highlight spot fetaure in the HDRI editor, or try adding transparent white shapes to the glass parts in photoshop. I will often times add glares and glints and soft highlights in photoshop afterwards if I can’t get KS to make it look the way I want.
Make sure you have Global Illumination turned on under lighting settings.
You can try to use different material types instead of glass like dielectric or gem stone, types that enables ABBE numbers.
But most impact has the lighting as Matt mentioned.
I have had a similar issue and what i had done is the ‘old style’ apple approach which was to have a piece of black to give the effect of it being a glass … i also did not use the glass material i had used dielectric this gives bit more of a shine / look as well.
On another note your render looks class! A really nice model
Dielectric is a great material. It renders faster than most transparent stuff and is very tweakable. I use it whenever I can. and yes, using black planes to block light (negative lighting) is just as important as positive lighting.
Thank you for the ideas.
That’s my new result with your tips
Thinks looks better than the first render
Nice render… Would love to see how you move forward with it.
yep, just that little detail with the glare on the glass helps a lot. the only thing now that I would comment is that the super soft gradient on the back of the phone doesn’t quite match with the sharp reflection on the glass, so you could somehow match a bit more the lighting between the two. if there is a sharp lighting edge on the glass, there should be something similar to that on the body. Doesnt’ have to be as sharp, since its a totally different material, but should have a hint of it.
