Hello folks,

I’ve been one old forum for the last couple of years, but I don’t post that much. I works as an interior designer for a caravan manufacturer in Europe. I can unfortunately not share any of my work since it’s mostly concepts and such that are classified. But I can share a bit about me instead in case anyone would be interested to read, just to test the chat.

I noticed the Keyshot button in our CAD software after working for a few months at my new job here and asked my boss if I could play around with it a little. He didn’t sound too enthusiastic but said that it was okay to try a little. Messed around with it while looking at videos from @will.gibbons until I felt like I started to get the hang of the basics. Made a sloppy rendering of some interiors from our product and all of a sudden the boss was all on board.

I got to spend basically as much time as I wanted on Keyshot and got them to buy a Keyshot 10 Pro license when it was released instead of the version that came with our CAD software. And now a couple of weeks ago I managed to convinced them to order a new dedicated rendering computer for me to use instead of our currently pretty outdated CAD machines, and my renderings appear in both our spare parts catalogues as well as our brochures and they play a big role in all our development right now. Completely self-taught with help from Wills Youtube videos. I do however hope to convince them to buy Wills courses for me as well to improve my work. If they won’t do it I’m considering buying them privately for my own gain since they seem so well made and well worth the price, and since I’d love to eventually get to work solely with renderings instead of squeezing them in with my regular work.

This ended up being a bit of a wall of text and I’m not sure if anyone will be interested in reading it, but hey… I don’t think it will hurt anyone either. And the challenge that sent me here asked me to share what I’m up to, so :man_shrugging:

Making me blush over here! Thanks for sharing your kind words and story. I’m always interested in how people come to the world of rendering. So many different industries and applications. What’s the number one thing you find the most challenging about using KeyShot for you personally at this time?

Yeah, these are lovely! If there’s anything I’d hope others can take away from your work here is how important it is to understand the power of getting the light exposure correct. Knowing when to let highlights clip and when they should not is something that’s hard to do without extensive photography knowledge/experience. Well-done!

No, thank you for inspiring me to continue with renderings and try to learn more, as well as sparking an interest for it outside of work! Thanks to you I have a dream of working as a visualization artist at some point, though it feels unlikely in regards to where I live.

I would say that my biggest struggle is when I have to work with complete models of caravans to render the interiors. Specifically the lighting.

The environments are often very narrow with lower ceiling height than you would usually see in an interior model, and to a big extent with indirect lighting through hidden LED-stripes. As icing on the cake most of our textures are really dark too, combined with a few really white ones. This makes it hard for me to light the scenes properly without overexposing the whites. I try to stick to the lights that are physically in the caravans as well as pushing light in through the windows, but indirect lights combined with small windows means that I often struggle with dark results and I end up spending a lot of time on adding various area lights inside the model to compensate. I’ve tried to take more advantage of the Image tab, but often it’s not enough. Likely much of that struggle comes from not having any previous experience with visualization or photography in general, so even though I feel like it’s getting better I don’t have a good enough eye for it yet and can’t really decide on what looks realistic or not.

Also the interior renders take soooo long to process, but hopefully that will be heavily improved when the new computer arrives. My only other real issue right now is that it takes so long to prep the interior models, since with each floorplan I have to start over completely from 0 and apply all the materials and lights from scratch since the interiors vary so much between them. And there are hundreds of parts that have the same textures but with different fiber directions, and very different locations of the LED-stripes. On top of this my current computer is not really made for rendering and lags a lot while working on the scenes. It’s basically just a ton of prep work and my workflow is probably far from optimal as well. But that’s on me for not really spending any time on learning the features that help with that yet :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Once again a wall of text, but renderings are such an interesting topic that I could just go on and on about it!

Hello, I’m glad that you find it interesting!
Right back at you, wishing you luck :slightly_smiling_face:
I’ll make sure to look for renders from work that I’m allowed to share, and remember to share any renders I do on my personal time as well!

This just a preview what we working on.
Soon we are going to animate the installation as a guide for technicians.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. Yes, all those do sound like challenges. However, since it sounds like you essentially work on the same product over and over, that gives you time to refine your workfow. It’s worth doing lots of tests (cpu vs gpu, interior vs product mode, testing denoising and exposure through the image tab). Every time you learn a better way of doing it, you’ll improve your process. And save and re-use assets any time you can!

I’m sure you’ll learn a lot while interatcting with others here too!

I’m sure you’re right, I’ve tried to make some things easier for myself already but I just have to bump it up a bit and make a good and structured workflow. I have for example made a folder of all the materials I use in a standard scene and named them to be in the order I like to use them. Things like that help quite a bit, I just need to put some more time into it.

And on the bright side, I have a steady income that isn’t affected negatively by the time it takes for me to produce a finished rendering, so it’s essentially just for my own sake that I want a faster and smoother process. On the contrary, the renderings have helped me get a substantial raise, so I should be happy either way!

Thank you for showing an interest in what I do!

Hi again everyone!

For those interested, after some petitions, I’ve decided to share this Keyshot package file with anyone interested. You will find 4 different studios, and different cameras, custom materials and environments.

You can buy this Keyshot Scene to play around with it on my Gumroad

Hope you like it, and thanks for your support!
